Some have compared a man's briefcase to the female version of a handy carry bag - the purse. Men chafe at this idea and there are differences. One difference is men generally only use briefcases for work whereas a purse is as essential a part of a woman's wardrobe as her dress or shoes and it goes with her everywhere. If you came upon a group of girls at the movies, every one of them will no doubt be carrying a purse whereas a gathering of men at leisure will almost never see them accompanied by their briefcases.

But one thing that is similar between a man's briefcase and the traditional woman's purse is that the variety of styles and uses is huge. Briefcases are not limited to the boardroom or the high-rise complex. You could see a man going to work on a construction site carrying a briefcase as much as a business executive on Wall Street carrying his important papers in one. So if you are thinking of getting your working guy a briefcase for a gift, there are a lot of options to think about to find the right model for his lifestyle and to make that gift unique.

Like purses, though, to really make that gift stand out and be special, adding a monogram to any of the many models of briefcases takes it from a humdrum gift to one that is valued as "the best gift I ever got". That simple and elegant stamp of the owner's initials in an artistic style or font makes a statement of ownership and of taste that is delivered to the owner's coworkers and superiors quietly but efficiently. One of the values of a particularly attractive briefcase is to be positioned strategically in the office so it can be seen and admired by visitors. If that monogram stands out perhaps in a classy gold or silver color, that says a lot about the owner to those who come for meetings.

Briefcases also make a statement when a businessperson enters a meeting. It is almost a stereotype in television or movies when a high powered lawyer or CEO enters a meeting in a hurry, pulls that briefcase up and opens it to find the very important papers that are inside. The briefcase communicates urgency, efficiency and business savvy. The monogram you add to the outside of the briefcase also communicates style consciousness and self confidence. And self confidence is a huge benefit in any business encounter.

That monogram also serves a more functional role of making that briefcase stand out amongst many. When the businessperson travels, being able to pick his briefcase out from those initials on the outside can be very helpful in a busy airport or from the luggage rack of a rental car van. That monogram can do a lot to avoid briefcases being swapped by mistake which is a disaster for both owners. These utilitarian uses are in addition to the status and style value monograms add to a businessperson's briefcase and these values far exceed the small cost it takes to get a briefcase monogrammed.
